Novice Intermediate Advanced
WRITING, FICTION, PROSE AND PLAYWRITING - NOVICE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points) Must have at least a 3x5 card. Give one point for each of the following that is present:
- Identification/Description of style of the entry.
- Approximate date in history such a writing would occur.
- Place/nationality in history that the entry is modeled upon.
- Cites at least one reference supporting this aspect of writing.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)
- 0:Non-period genre, OR blatantly modern in form, subjects or themes.
- 1:Period structure but non-period elements in style, themes, subject; OR period subject and themes, but non-period structure.
- 2:Period elements combined with some inconsistencies.
- 3:Period elements combined with few inconsistencies.
- 4:No obvious inconsistencies in form, subject, methods, etc. OR total consistency of all elements, including small details, to specified period context; proper use of period language and vocabulary (or reasonable equivalent if style would have required a foreign language); appropriateness to a specified time-place context or occasion.
COMPLEXITY (1-5 points) Rank the ambition of the attempt, NOT workmanship, on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the following.
- plot (with regard to subplots and intricacy)
- supporting detail & background
- characters (depth, use of minor)
- structure
- scope and size of work
- language and style
WORKMANSHIP (1-5 points) Keeping in mind this entry is at Novice Level, rank the success of the attempt on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the following.
- technical: structure, format, physical presentation, etc.
- use of language
- clarity, coherency, logic
- how well does it all fit together? Note transitions, balance, highs and lows, continuity, etc.
- application of period conventions (e.g. verse, repetition, exaggeration)
CREATIVITY (1-6 points) Give score based on the following:
- 0:Blatant copy or rehash of existing work.
- 1:Piece is illogical in context of period.
- 2:Trite themes with a few changes.
- 3:Logical combination of standard elements with some original touches logical to genre and period context.
- 4:Logical combination of standard elements with many original touches logical to genre and period context.
- 5:Original and fresh within limits of genre. Where passages are familiar, it is allusion or "archetype" that springs to mind rather than "copy."
- 6:Highly original within limits of genre; special appropriateness to a specified time, place, person, occasion, or situation.
QUALITY (1-6 points)
Evaluate the work as a whole. NOTE: This category is subjective; however, the judge should take into account prior category scores, aesthetic appeal, presentation, intuitive response, and other such items not previously addressed. Keep in mind that this entry is at Novice Level, regardless of the skill of the entrant.

DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points) Must have at least 1 page, 2-3 pages preferable. More is acceptable. Give score based on the following:
- Identification/Description of style of the entry.
- Lists date and place/nationality in history that the entry is modeled upon.
- Cites at least two references supporting this aspect of writing.
- Some discussion on period writing style.

DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points) Must have at least 3 pages of discussion (NOT including visuals and bibliography). More is acceptable. Give score based on the following:
- 0:No documentation or very inaccurate documentation.
- 1:Minimum information (time, place, style).
- 2:Same as #1 plus some detail; cites several modern scholarly works and/or modern translations of period works.
- 3:Same as #2 plus support for all major and many minor aspects of the work; evidence that writer knows characteristics of period style and content for the genre. Cites at lease one period example.
- 4:Above, plus documentation of overall form, structure, themes, subjects, and their interrelationships, as well as their appropriateness to genre and to social context of specified place and time, using period examples. Explains any deviations or variations from period norms.
