Includes the construction of completed objects primarily from leather, with or without decoration; or the construction of leather items, with or without decoration, for use in specific non-leather project (Ex. hinges and handle for a wood box). If entrant did only decorative work, he must note that, and only that part will be judged. Leather preparation (Ex. tanning, dying, parchment making) will be judged only as part of a completed project. Prepared leather itself may be entered in MATERIAL PREPARATION.
Novice Intermediate Advanced
LEATHERWORK - NOVICE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points) At least a 3x5 card, more is acceptable. Give one point for each of the following present:
- Identification/description of entry.
- Approximate date and place in history.
- Includes materials/tools list or states method used to complete entry.
- At least one cited reference (either illustrative or descriptive) relating to period use of the entry OR method of constructing entry.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points) Give 1 point for each period element present:
- Materials and supplies are period or give period effect
- Entry is appropriate to stated time or place
- Style, Pattern(s), design and finished entry are consistent with one another and seem period.
- Period tools and procedures were used as much as possible
COMPLEXITY (1-5 points) Rank the ambition of the entry, not the workmanship, on a scale of 1-5 based on the following
- Number and complexity of pattern pieces and designs used
- Difficulty of materials handling involved in a project;
- Scale of project - amount of detail related to size, use of original patterns for construction or decoration;
- Amount of time involved, including research, material preparation
- Number of steps, kinds of tools used, amount of guidance.
WORKMANSHIP (1-5 points) Rank the success of the attempt on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the following:
- Effective use of materials and tools
- Attention to details, neatness, finishing touches
- Appropriate application of designs, proportions
CREATIVITY (1-6 points) Give score based on the following:
- 1:Piece isn't logical to context of period
- 2:Kit used with little or no modification
- 3:A standardized project, with added personal variations to ornamentation.
- 4:Modified both pattern and ornamentation
- 5:Project is mostly original application of period or known world designs OR is an exact reproduction of period piece.
- 6:Work is an original application of period or known world designs and methods.
QUALITY (1-6 points)Rate the aesthetic effect an appeal beyond ere technical proficiency.
Consider how you react to the entry and how the entrant seems to have related to the materials, processes and finished project, keeping in mind that this entry is at Novice level, regardless of the skill of the entrant. What is the "gloveness" of the glove, the "pouchness" of the pouch?
LEATHERWORK - INTERMEDIATE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)Must have at least 1 page, 2-3 pages preferable. More is acceptable. Give one point for each of the following that is present:
- Identification/ description of entry and approximate date and place in history.
- Includes materials/tools list and how item is used.
- Describes method to complete entry or reason for the way it was done.
- At least 2 cited references (either illustrative or descriptive) relating to period use of entry or method of constructing entry
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points) Give 1 point for each element present:
- Materials and supplies are period or give that effect
- Entry is appropriate to stated time and place and finished item approximates period counterparts
- Style, patterns, and design are consistent with one another and suited to stated period and function.
- Period tools and procedures were used as much as possible; use of modern substitutes is noted and attempts to attain period effect are explained.
COMPLEXITY (1-5 points) Rank the ambition of the attempt, NOT the workmanship, on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the following.
- Number and complexity of pattern pieces or design elements used.
- Difficulty of materials handling in the project
- Scale of project - amount of detail related to size, use of original patterns for construction or decoration
- Amount of time involved, including research, material preparation
- Number of steps, kinds of tools used, amount of guidance
WORKMANSHIP (1-5 points) Rank the success of the attempt on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the following.
- Effective use of materials and tools
- Attention to details, neatness, finishing touches
- Appropriate application of designs(s), proportions
- Ability of entry to serve intended function
CREATIVITY (1-4 points) Give score based on the following:
- 1:A standardized project with minor original elements
- 2:Added major original variations to either basic pattern or decorative ornamentation
- 3:Project is mostly original application of period or Known World designs or almost exact reproduction of period piece
- 4:Work is entirely original application of period designs and methods or entirely reproduces period piece.
QUALITY (1-8 points) Rate the aesthetic effect and appeal beyond mere technical proficiency.

LEATHERWORK - ADVANCED
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)Must have at least 3 pages of discussion (NOT including visuals and bibliography). More is acceptable. Give score based on the following:
- 0:No or very inaccurate documentation
- 1:Minimum of time period, country of origin, medium, style.
- 2:Minimum information with visual reference(s) to period examples, but little or no discussion of period practice; OR minimum information plus discussion of period practice, but no visual references.
- 3:Minimum information plus visual references and discussion of period practice.
- 4:#3 but very complete examples and discussion. Includes rationale for design elements, techniques and materials used, as well as their appropriateness to each other, to the item's purpose and to period. Explains original project or research. Explains any deviations or variations from period norm.

- Materials and supplies are period or give period effect.
- Entry is appropriate to stated time or place.

- Individual participation in pattern research
WORKMANSHIP (0-6 points) ) Rank the success of the entry on a scale of 0-6 based on the following:
- Mastery of period style and practice
- Choice of handling and material
- Execution of techniques (construction, decoration, etc.): neatness, finishing, etc.
- Form/design: aesthetics, pattern development, decorative motifs, etc.
- Function/durability: Does it do what it should? Will it hold up in use?
CREATIVITY (0-4 points)
- 0:Piece isn't logical in context of period.
- 1:Logical combination of a few copied elements.
- 2:Evidence of original work logical for period context in design and execution.
- 3:Creative inter-mixing in combination of elements; much innovation logical to period context or is an exact reproduction of a period piece.
- 4:Original, innovative combination of period materials, techniques, and designs, as might have been done by a creative period artist. Special consideration such as personalization to an event, individual or idea should be given.
QUALITY (1-6 points) Evaluate the work as a whole.
NOTE: This category is subjective; however, the judge should take into account prior category scores, aesthetic appeal, presentation, intuitive response, and other such items not previously addressed.
