(Revised 1/98)
Category includes period forms. Knitting in period would include hats, shirts, stockings, gloves, knitted carpets used as wall hangings. Extant pieces include 2-color gloves, fagoted silk stockings, a silk tunic with diamond designs. Crochet was apparently used solely for some types of 16th century church lace. Macrame was usually used to finish off the warp on woven fabrics in decorative knotted fringes. Period work nearly always used fine threads, frequently silk.

DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points) Must have at least a 3X5 card. More is acceptable. Give one point for each of the following that is present:
- Identification/Description of the entry.
- Approximate date and place/nationality in history that the entry is modeled upon.
- List use(s) of the entry.
- Cites at least one reference, either illustrative (pictures) or descriptive relating to either A) period use of such item OR B) period method of constructing such item OR C) both A & B.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points) Consider item, materials, stitches, design, tools.
- 0:Non-period item Such as modern clothing, plant hanger, granny squares; OR style is out of period; OR other blatant modernity.
- 1:Style is period, but with obvious out-of-period elements: e.g. obviously modern design or materials; materials incorrect for the design or intended use; obvious mixture of elements from different periods.
- 2:Basically period-looking, with minor inconsistencies, e.g. a hat which is knitted but not felted.
- 3:Period piece; no inconsistencies.
- 4:Special effort to achieve completely period effect by utilizing one or more of the following: period design, period materials (spun own-wool or silk thread), tools (made own knitting needles or hook), techniques (dyed thread medievally), etc.
COMPLEXITY (1-5 points) Rank the ambition of the attempt, NOT the workmanship, on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the following:
- difficulty of stitches and techniques
- difficulty of pattern(a)
- variety of elements/patterns/stitches/techniques
- difficulty of materials used
- scope of effort (size of piece in relation to fineness of detail)
WORKMANSHIP (1-5 points) Rank the success of the attempt on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the following:
- evenness (especially in geometric designs, repeating patterns)
- neatness
- starts and ends
- tension
- uniformity (in density, stitch length, etc.)
- finishing of piece
CREATIVITY (1-6 points) Give score based on the following:
- 1:Piece illogical in context of period.
- 2:Project fits the context of period, but an adequate understanding of the item being created is missing.
- 3:Exact copy of design from an item done in a different craft.
- 4:Logical combination of several copied elements.
- 5:Logical, original combination of traditional motifs.
- 6:Original, innovative combination of period materials, techniques, and designs, with personalizing touches, all in a manner logical to chosen period and purpose of item.
QUALITY (1-6 points) Rate the aesthetic effect and appeal, beyond the mere technical proficiency. Consider how you react to the entry (intuitive response).
NOTE: This category is subjective; however, the judge should take into account prior category scores, aesthetic appeal, presentation, and other such items not previously addressed. Keep in mind that this entry is at Novice Level, regardless of the skill of the entrant.
