(Revised 1/98)
Includes page illustration intended to accompany written text. Calligraphy need not be completed and will not be judged, but judges will consider the compatibility of style chosen and layout of the text area, in relation to the illumination. Entrant must note source of subject of text, but should not discuss text at length except as it directly relates to the illumination (Ex., if illumination illustrates subject matter of text). Full page miniatures with no text space on the page may be entered if entrant specifies in documentation what text or subject matter the page could accompany. For purposes of competition, SCA awards or official documents will be considered period texts.

- 4:Some creative combinations of copied elements (Ex., ivy vine design, knotwork pattern) in a unique motif.
- 5:Creation of some elements on the page, still with some copied motifs.
- 6:Creation of some elements, no directly copied motifs.
QUALITY (1-6 points)
Evaluate the work as a whole. NOTE: This category is subjective; however, the judge should take into account prior category scores, aesthetic appeal, presentation, intuitive response, and other such items not previously addressed.
ILLUMINATION - INTERMEDIATE

- 2:Fairly period effect. Used mostly period design elements, but with modern materials (such as acrylic paints).
- 3:Good attempt at looking like medieval or renaissance work. Some period materials or reasonable substitutes (artificial gold leaf, period-looking paper parchment, or period type pigments).
- 4:Used all period design elements, few modern materials. Period effect definitely outweighs distraction of modern aspects.
COMPLEXITY (1-5 points) Evaluate the difficulty of the entry, NOT the workmanship, on a scale of 1-5 based on the following:
- Number, size, variety, intricacy and placement of design motifs; illuminated capitals.
- Difficulty of materials and tools used.
- Layout, overall composition and color scheme.
- Use of miniatures, theme and/or attempt to relate illumination to text.
- Scale, balance of borders and general design with respect to the calligraphy.

- Control of medium (i.e. brush strokes, runs, color mixing).
- Harmonious color use (by period standards).
- Shading (or lack thereof) consistent with a specified style.
- Well finished and neatly completed.
- Appropriate level of detail.
CREATIVITY (0-4 points) Give score based on the following:
- 0:Piece is not logical in context of period.
- 1:Copy of a piece done by someone else; colors applied straight from container without mixing or toning.
- Copied motifs with some rearrangement; color scheme slightly modified, but little adjustment of commercial tones.
- 2:Successful combination of design elements from different sources; changes in proportions or scale used to add variety; some original work incorporated; some manipulation of colors.
- 3:Most of elements original or significantly modified from reference sources; extensive custom blending of colors; extensive use of personalization and/or SCA-related motifs.
QUALITY (1-8 points) ) Evaluate the work as a whole
