(Revised 1/98)
This category includes panel and canvas paintings, and drawings that are associated with ecclesiastical purposes. (Symbolism, how the human form is depicted in different periods and cultures.) Icons are separated into a category separate from painting because the construction of medieval icons requires components besides painting. This may include the areas of woodwork, metalwork, leatherwork, bright metal, etc.

- Number and variety of design elements (figures, portraits, animals, landscape, architecture, etc).
- Difficulty and variety of techniques attempted (layering, gesso, etc).
- Amount of time involved including research and material preparation.
WORKMANSHIP (1-5 points)Rank the success of the entry, on a scale of 1-5, based on the following:

- 6:Project is a combination of elements and materials that is logical to a single period context; might have been done by a creative period artist.
QUALITY (1-6 points)Rate the aesthetic effect and appeal, beyond the mere technical proficiency. Consider how you react to the entry (intuitive response).
NOTE: This category is subjective; however, the judge should take into account prior category scores, aesthetic appeal, presentation, and other such items not previously addressed. Keep in mind that this entry is at Novice Level, regardless of the skill of the entrant.
