Novice Intermediate Advanced
FELTMAKING - NOVICE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points) Must have at least a 3x5 card. More is acceptable.
- 0:No documentation
- 1:Any one of the following items: Country of origin, Time period, References, History of similar items, Rational for choice of style, and Directions for procedures used
- 2:Any two of the aforementioned points
- 3:Any three of the aforementioned points
- 4:Any four of the aforementioned points
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)
- 0:Presence of materials that are not natural
- 1:Finished product is inappropriate for stated use (i.e., too rough for court wear, too fine for rugged use)
- 2:Entry has flaws in construction or is obviously modern (i.e., edges finished inappropriately or fake fur added)
- 3:Entry has minor flaws in construction, but explanation of what was correct is offered.
- 4:Entry has the look of a period item and appears appropriate for stated use
COMPLEXITY (1-5 points)
- 1:Simple flat piece
- 2:One of the following present in entry: Use of hand carded or fluffed fiber, Complex shaping, Seaming, Patterned overlay with felt or fiber, Embellishment--fringing, braiding, Two or more matching pieces (i.e., gloves or shoes), Use of multiple fiber types, Project of large physical size
- 3:Two of aforementioned points present
- 4:Three of aforementioned points present
- 5:Four of the aforementioned points present
WORKMANSHIP (1-5 points)
- 1:Felt of even density, no weak or thin areas noted
- 2:Well fulled--hardness of felt is uniform
- 3:Edges are uniform, or finished in an appropriate manner
- 4:Shaping is consistent, and appropriate
- 5:Overlay is well attached, project is well finished
CREATIVITY (1-6 points)
- 1:Common item without embellishment or color.
- 2:Exact copy of period piece without deviation in color, embellishment, or fiber.
- 3:Item based on period reference, but with slight deviation in design.
- 4:Successful combination of period design elements, with some individual work incorporated.
- 5:Period references evident, with unique additions
- 6:Excellent use of design elements and materials to achieve desired period effect, as well as individuality
QUALITY (1-6 points)
- 1:Loosely felted--would not stand up to intended use, poor fit, or obviously modern
- 2:Materials poorly chosen without proper explanation
- 3:Fair example of felting, but rough and uneven
- 4:Good use of period material but with modern touches
- 5:Nice period look, materials\processes appropriate for intended use and well finished
- 6:Extraordinarily period, well constructed and perfectly finished
FELTMAKING - INTERMEDIATE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)Must have at least 1 page, 2-3 pages preferable. More is acceptable. Give one point for each of the following that is present:
- Identification/Description of the entry plus the approximate date and place/nationality in history that the entry is modeled upon.
- Time period that the entry is modeled upon.
- Rational for choice of style, and directions for procedures used to create entry (may include reasons for why a certain process or material was used).
- Cites at least two references, either illustrative (pictures) or descriptive relating to either A) period use of such item OR B) period method of constructing such item OR C) both A & B.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points) Give one point for each element present::

FELTMAKING - ADVANCED
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)Must have at least 3 pages of discussion (NOT including visuals and bibliography). More is acceptable. Give score based on the following:
- 0:No or very inaccurate documentation
- 1:Minimum information: time period, country, style.
- 2:Minimum information with visual reference(s) to period examples, but little or no discussion of period practice; OR minimum information plus discussion of period practice, but no visual references.
- 3:Minimum information plus visual references and discussion of period practice.
- 4:#3 but very complete examples and discussion. Includes rationale for choice of style, techniques and materials used, as well as their appropriateness to each other, to the item's purpose and to period. Explains original project or research. Explains any deviations or variations from period norm.
