This category includes caparisons and other horse equipment dealing with decorative purposes. These can be done either as a "model example" or full size (actual) items. If full size attire is being entered and the horse cannot be present, entrant must supply four (4) photos of horse standing in attire (both sides, front, and rear). [Photos of horse moving in attire are optional.]
Novice Intermediate Advanced
EQUESTRIAN ATTIRE - NOVICE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points) Must have at least a 3X5 card. More is acceptable. Give one point for each of the following that is present:
- Identification/Description of the entry.
- Approximate date and place/nationality in history that the entry is modeled upon.
- Includes materials/tools list OR states method used to complete entry.
- Cites at least one reference, either illustrative (pictures) or descriptive relating to either A) period use of such item OR B) period method of constructing such item OR C) both A & B. Can use copy of picture, quotes from resources, etc.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)
- 0:Attire unsuitable for horse type used OR out of period/country stated.
- 1:Attire shows several out of period elements (wrong type saddle, stirrups before invented, etc).
- 2:Attire shows few out of period elements.
- 3:No out of period elements in attire itself but inappropriate use of materials.
- 4:No obvious out of period elements, attire is appropriate and correct
COMPLEXITY (1-5 points)
- 1:Very simple attire, basic design and construction. No tack or uses already constructed tack.
- 2:Simple attire, uses tack and decorates it.
- 3:More complete attire, uses accessory tack (i.e., saddlebags) or partial armor used.
- 4:Attire has more intricate work. (Applique instead of painting, use of hand tooling on leather where applicable.)
- 5:Totally complete attire and tack for period and use OR has very intricate work on decorations, accessories, etc. (Hand embroidery instead of applique.)
NOTE: Extra points may be awarded for the incorporation of heraldic elements.
WORKMANSHIP (1-5 points) Rate the success of the entry on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the following:
- Attire fit - Does it fit the horse (or model) properly? Does it NOT restrict or inhibit movement?
- Attire construction - Do pieces fit together properly? (On models, are attire pieces removable? Is it handsewn or glued together?)
- Clean, neat appearance.
- Materials used (Use of modern materials to produce authentic effect not to be penalized.)
- Uses suitable leather (or scale version on model) to withstand stress of use on bridles, saddles, breast bands, and cruppers.
CREATIVITY (1-6 points)Give score based on the following:
- 1:Piece isn't logical to context of period.
- 2:Exact copy of a source picture with no modifications.
- 3:Copy of source picture with slight modifications.
- 4:Logical combination of several source elements.
- 5:Evidence of original work, logical to period context. (A simple attire designed to fit an SCA persona.)
- 6:Original work of an ornate/complex attire.
NOTE: Extra points may be awarded for the incorporation of heraldic elements.
QUALITY (1-6 points)
- 1:Inferior. Attire is less than half complete and construction of attire is poor.
- 2:Very Poor. Appearance quality only. The attire looks fine but is made of poor materials AND is poorly constructed.
- 3:Poor. The attire is made of poor grade material OR is poorly constructed OR is barely complete.
- 4:Average. Attire is done in good material. Construction is good. Tack is complete but accessories (if applicable) are not.
- 5:Excellent. Attire is done of quality material, trim and designs are pleasing to the eye. Tack is complete and decorated for period. Accessories are complete (but need not be functionable or usable, merely decorative.)
- 6:Superior. Attire is made of quality materials. The construction is totally correct. All tack is correct and properly fitted. All accessories are to scale, appropriate to the period, positioned on the horse correctly and are useable.
NOTE: Extra points may be awarded for the incorporation of heraldic elements.
EQUESTRIAN ATTIRE - INTERMEDIATE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points) Must have at least 1 page, 2-3 pages preferable. More is acceptable. Give one point for each of the following that is present:
- Identification/Description of the entry and the approximate date and place/nationality in history that the entry is modeled upon.
- Statement or listing of materials used in entry's construction and use(s) of the entry.
- Describes method(s) used to create entry (may include reasons for why a certain process or material was used).
- Cites at least two references, either illustrative (pictures) or descriptive relating to either A) period use of such item OR B) period method of constructing such item OR C) both A & B.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)
- 0:Attire unsuitable for horse type used OR out of period/country stated.
- 1:Attire shows several out of period elements (wrong type saddle, stirrups before invented, etc).
- 2:Attire shows few out of period elements.
- 3:No out of period elements in attire itself but inappropriate use of materials.

- 0:No or very inaccurate documentation
- 1:Minimum of time period, country of origin, medium, style.
- 2:Minimum information with visual reference(s) to period examples, but little or no discussion of period practice; OR minimum information plus discussion of period practice, but no visual references.
- 3:Minimum information plus visual references and discussion of period practice.
- 4:#3 but very complete examples and discussion. Includes rationale for design elements, techniques and materials used, as well as their appropriateness to each other, to the item's purpose and to period. Explains original project or research. Explains any deviations or variations from period norm.
