Novice Intermediate Advanced
DRAWING - NOVICE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)
- 0:No documentation
- 1:3x5 card with any one of the following :media used, period of origin, identification/description of entry, reference
- 2:3x5 card with any of the two above
- 3:3x5 card with any of the three above
- 4:3x5 card with all four of the above
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points) Give one point for each of listed period elements
- Materials used would have been available, or suitability of modern substitutes is noted and explained
- Subject matter is appropriate to period
- Layout looks period
- Style of rendering looks period
COMPLEXITY (1-5 points) Rank the ambition of the entry, not the workmanship, on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the following:
- Number of subject elements, and variety of forms depicted
- Use of shading or perspective
- Overall composition and layout
- Scale - amount of detail related to size of entry and number of subjects
WORKMANSHIP (1-5 points) Rank the success of the entry on a scale of 1-5 based on the following:
- Effective use and control of media (i.e. ink, charcoal, etc)
- Design quality of composition
- Accuracy of rendering in relation of style of stated period
- Draftsmanship and effective use of tools
CREATIVITY (1-6 points)
- 1:Exact copy of period piece in same or similar medium
- 2:Close copy of period work, but translated to a different medium
- 3:Composition using copied elements from 2 or more period works with little modification otherwise
- 4:Composition of some copied elements and some original elements using mostly period motifs
- 5:Composition using mostly original elements with only a few copied elements
- 6:Almost entirely original work using period motifs appropriate to style
QUALITY (1-6 points)
Evaluate the work as a whole. NOTE: This category is subjective; however, the judge should take into account prior category scores, aesthetic appeal, presentation, intuitive response, and other such items not previously addressed.
DRAWING - INTERMEDIATE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)
- 0:No documentation
- 1:Very inaccurate documentation.
- 2:Minimum information (time, place, style).
- 3:Same as #2 with visual reference (Photocopies, pictures, postcards, etc.) to period examples, but little or no discussion of period practice; OR same as #2 plus discussion of period practice, but no visual references.
- 4:Same as #2 plus visual references and discussion of period practice, including at least specified period examples for style and design, and discussion of materials and techniques.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points) Give one point for each of the listed period elements.
- Materials used would have been available, or suitability of modern substitutes is noted and explained
- Subject matter is appropriate to period
- Layout looks period
- Style of rendering looks period
COMPLEXITY (1-5 points) Rank the ambition, not the success, of the piece on a scale of 1-5 based on the following:
- Number of elements (even if repetitions of same thing)
- Variety of elements (how many different things, actions)
- Scope of project; ambition of the attempt
- Difficulty of materials
- Number, duration and difficulty of steps and techniques
WORKMANSHIP (1-5 points) Rate the success of the entry on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the following:
- Effective use and control of media (i.e. - ink, charcoal, etc.)
- Design quality of composition
- Accuracy of rendering in relation to style of stated period
- Draftsmanship and effective use of tools
CREATIVITY (0-4 points) Give score based on the following:
- 0:Piece is not logical in context of period
- 1:Exact copy of a period piece in same or similar medium
- 2:Close copy of period work, but translated to a different medium
- 3:Composition of some copied elements and some original elements using mostly period motifs
- 4:Almost entirely original work using period motifs appropriate to style
QUALITY (1-8 points) )
Evaluate the work as a whole. NOTE: This category is subjective; however, the judge should take into account prior category scores, aesthetic appeal, presentation, intuitive response, and other such items not previously addressed.
DRAWING - ADVANCED
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)
- 0:No documentation or very inaccurate documentation.
- 1:Minimum information (time, place, style).
- 2:Same as #1 with visual reference (Photocopies, pictures, postcards, etc.) to period examples, but little or no discussion of period practice; OR same as #1 plus discussion of period practice, but no visual references.
- 3:Same as #1 plus visual references and discussion of period practice, including at least specified period examples for style and design, and discussion of materials and techniques.
- 4:Same as #3 but very complete examples and discussion, including reasons for choice of subject and rationale for design. Explains any original research or experiment; explains any deviation or variation from period norms.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)
- 0:Totally inappropriate to time period
- 1:Generally period with some obvious modern elements present OR obvious mixture of elements from different cultures or periods (Ex. late-period media used for an exclusively early-period object, combination of motifs from unconnected cultures or periods, etc.)
- 2:Overall period design/execution with minor inconsistencies.
- 3:Period design and execution with no inconsistencies; period materials or reasonable equivalents.
- 4:A completely period product by use of period design, materials, tools, techniques, etc.
COMPLEXITY (0-6 points) Rank the ambition of the attempt, NOT the workmanship, on a scale of 0 to 6 based on the following:
- number and variety of composition elements (layout, proportion, balance, perspective, color, etc.)
- number and variety of design elements (figures, portraits, animals, landscape, architecture, etc.)
- difficulty and variety of techniques attempted
- scope of undertaking (size of work relative to amount of detail)
WORKMANSHIP (0-6 points) Rank the success of the attempt on a scale of 0 to 6 based on the following.
- draftsmanship
- control of medium
- design/composition
- mastery of period style and technique
CREATIVITY (0-4 points)
- 0:Piece is illogical in context of period.
- 1:Logical combination of a few copied elements.
- 2:Evidence of original work logical to period context, in design or execution.
- 3:Creative interpolation in combination of elements; special consideration such as personalization to an event, individual, or idea.
- 4:Combination of elements and materials that is logical to a single period context; might have been done by a creative period artist.
