Individual or group entries. An original dance (by entrant or other) may be used if it is completely authentic in style. Choreography will not be judged; interpretation and alteration of a given choreography will be judged.
Novice Intermediate Advanced
DANCE PERFORMANCE, EUROPEAN - NOVICE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)
- 0:No actual documentation
- 1:3x5 card with any one of the following: country of origin, period of origin, characteristics of style for that period, reference
- 2:3x5 card with any two of the above
- 3:3x5 card with any three of the above
- 4:3x5 card with all four of the above
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)
- 0:Dance choreography or performance style not period
- 1:Mixes period and non-period elements, or mixes incompatible styles.
- 2:Basically period, with minor inconsistencies (Ex. incorrect handholds).
- 3:Authentic not only in steps and figures, but also in music and details such as posture, handholds and mood of dance (solemn, flirtatious, etc.)
- 4:Special effort taken to create a completely period impression: Ex. appropriate garb, live music, etc.
COMPLEXITY (1-5 points)Rank the ambition of the entry, NOT the workmanship, on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the following:
- variety of steps and figures
- difficulty of steps and figures
- difficulty of speed and timing
- difficulty of theme or mood
- use of props, special garb, mime, other added elements.
- scope of endeavor (length, number of people, etc.)
WORKMANSHIP (1-5 points)Rank the success of the attempt on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the following.
- knowledge of dance (accuracy, confidence)
- timing
- spacing
- proper execution of steps, including precision and grace
- development of theme or mood, audience awareness, showmanship.
CREATIVITY (1-6 points)
- 1:Standard routine, but looks mechanical.
- 2:Standard routine that doesn't look mechanical OR some variation from the routine: Ex: combinations, prop use, interaction with music, and/or awareness of audience.
- 3:Combinations and innovative use of steps or patterns or tempo/interpretation of music.
- 4:#3 plus dancer moves with some grace, makes occasional errors but dance flows smoothly.
- 5:#3 plus dancer moves gracefully, few or no mistakes, dance flows smoothly.
- 6:Steps look new, transitions flow, dancer interprets music with body, arms and expression.
NOTE: Extra points may be awarded for use of original or unusual elements introduced (example: mime, props, masks); well-developed theme or mood (Ex. dance macabre, courtship, mourning, etc.) if expressed in a logical and appropriate manner.
QUALITY (1-6 points)
Evaluate the work as a whole. NOTE: This category is subjective; however, the judge should take into account prior category scores, aesthetic appeal, presentation, intuitive response, and other such items not previously addressed.
DANCE PERFORMANCE, EUROPEAN - INTERMEDIATE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)
- 0:No documentation
- 1:Very inaccurate documentation.
- 2:Minimum information (time, place, style, context 3:Same as #1 plus at least one specific source; name of music used.
- 4:Some discussion of the relationship between various elements (steps, music, costume, etc.); several sources cited.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)
- 0:Dance choreography or performance style not period
- 1:Mixes period and non-period elements, or mixes incompatible styles.
- 2:Basically period, with minor inconsistencies (Ex. incorrect handholds).
- 3:Authentic not only in steps and figures, but also in music and details such as posture, handholds and mood of dance (solemn, flirtatious, etc.)

- 0:No documentation or very inaccurate documentation.
- 1:Minimum information (time, place, style, context (Ex. court or peasant))
- 2:Same as #1 plus copy of steps with no further explanation.
- 3:Same as #2 plus further explanation, such as discussion of rationale for elements of the dance, or explanation of creative elements.
- 4:Same as #3 but with complete detail, such as discussion of the purpose or context of the dance, influence of garb, social class, etc. on performance; OR dance is an original translation and reconstruction from a primary source, with explanation of methods. Explains any deviations or variations from period norms.
