DANCE PERFORMANCE, EASTERN - NOVICE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)
- 0:No actual documentation
- 1:3x5 card with any one of the following: country of origin, period of origin, characteristics of style for that period, reference
- 2:3x5 card with any two of the above
- 3:3x5 card with any three of the above
- 4:3x5 card with all four of the above
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)
- 0:Piece is not logical in period context
- 1:Modern music; may have period feel, but uses modern instruments. Modern steps, but with period feel.
- 2:Authentic music, (whether performed on modern or period instruments) with "inauthentic" steps or authentic steps with "inauthentic" music.
- 3:Both authentic steps and music, but they don't necessarily go together (Ex. pavane steps to bransle music.)
- 4:Steps and music, both authentic and appropriate to each other. Allow for inappropriate ornamentation (Ex. hand placement, style of reverence...)
COMPLEXITY (1-5 points)Rank the ambition of the attempt, NOT the workmanship, on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the following.
- variety of steps
- difficulty of steps
- difficulty of sequences of steps
- difficulty and variety of upper body gestures and movement
- difficulty and variety of self-accompaniment and/or prop use
- difficulty of theme/narrative/mood
- scope of endeavor (length of dance, etc.)
WORKMANSHIP (1-5 points)Rank the success of the attempt on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the following.
- grace, precision, accuracy
- timing
- smoothness, transitions
- use of space
- isolation movements (only the parts that should move, do)
- showmanship, audience awareness, expression of theme or mood

CREATIVITY (1-6 points)
- 1:Standard routine, but looks mechanical.
- 2:Standard routine that doesn't look mechanical OR some variation from the routine: Ex: combinations, prop use, interaction with music, and/or awareness of audience.
- 3:Combinations and innovative use of steps or variety of zill patterns or tempo/interpretation of music.
- 4:#3 plus dancer moves with some grace, makes occasional errors but dance flows smoothly.
- 5:#3 plus dancer moves gracefully, few or no mistakes, dance flows smoothly.
- 6:Steps look new, transitions flow, dancer interprets music with body, arms and expression.
NOTE: Extra points may be awarded for innovative use of veils, props, or self-accompaniment.
QUALITY (1-6 points)
Evaluate the work as a whole. NOTE: This category is subjective; however, the judge should take into account prior category scores, aesthetic appeal, presentation, intuitive response, and other such items not previously addressed.
DANCE PERFORMANCE, EASTERN - INTERMEDIATE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)
- 0:No documentation
- 1:Very inaccurate documentation.
- 2:Minimum information (time, place, style).
- 3:Same as #1 plus at least one specific source; name of music used.
- 4:Some discussion of the relationship between various elements (steps, music, costume, etc.); several sources cited.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)
- 0:Entire dance is blatantly out of period (Ex: high heels or cabaret costume; bared midriff except in distinctly Indian dances; seduction).
- 1:Generally period style, but with some obviously out-of-period elements (Ex: extensive veilwork, unless Indian; costuming inaccuracies; obviously modern music on tape); OR obvious mixture of styles from different cultures or periods.
- 2:Period performance with minor inconsistencies.
- 3:Completely period performance: period movements, adequate costume, appropriate accompaniment (Ex: folkloric tape with proper instrumentation), consistency of performance to music and music style.
- 4:#3 plus special effort to create completely period impression: Ex: live music, use of authentic prop(s) from indicated culture as appropriate, development of traditional period theme with trappings, etc.

Evaluate the work as a whole. NOTE: This category is subjective; however, the judge should take into account prior category scores, aesthetic appeal, presentation, intuitive response, and other such items not previously addressed.

DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)
- 0:No documentation or very inaccurate documentation.
- 1:Minimum information (time, place, style).
- 2:Same as #1 plus at least one specific source; name of music used.
- 3:Some discussion of the relationship between various elements (steps, music, costume, etc.); several sources cited.
- 4:Complete discussion of choice of music, costume and steps, as well as context in which dance would be performed; explanation of any theme. Explains any deviations or variations from period norm.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)
