Entry must include color rendering of outfit drawn on a figure and descriptions of all pieces of costume, with additional materials (detail sketches, swatches, patterns, etc.) at entrant's discretion. Artistic quality of figure drawn (i.e., hands, face, etc.) will not be judged, but depiction of outfit should be clear and accurate, and will be judged.
Novice Intermediate Advanced
CLOTHING DESIGN - NOVICE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points) Must have at least a 3X5 card. More is acceptable. Give one point for each of the following that is present:
- Identification/Description of the entry.
- Approximate date and place/nationality in history that the entry is modeled upon.
- Pattern source (if any) and style.
- Cites at least one reference, either illustrative (pictures) or descriptive relating to either A) period use of such item OR B) period method of constructing such item OR C) both A & B.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)
- 0: Totally inappropriate to time period
- 1: Period elements combined in inauthentic fashion. Inappropriate mixture of times and cultures.
- 2: Looks authentic on surface, but some inauthentic elements in design, color, choice of fabric, construction, etc.
- 3: Authentic in both look and construction; period colors, specified fabric(s) either period or exceptionally close; construction methods period.
- 4: Above, plus special effort in presentation of information to assure total period effect if outfit were constructed, i.e. all details of construction, materials, accessories and embellishment are completely discussed, described and depicted; combination of all elements is logical to period context.
COMPLEXITY (1-5 points)Ambition of the entry, NOT the workmanship. NOTE: Judge only complexity of presentation, NOT how complex it would be to construct the outfit.
- difficulty of rendering (main color drawing)
- construction and pattern; how much detail entered
- embellishment: add points if samples (embroidery, trim, buttons) are provided as well as descriptions.
- accessory details: discussion of items to be worn with outfit.
- materials: if no discussion of fabric at all, rank 0. With description but no swatches, rank 1. With swatches, rank 2 and up.
- scope of endeavor: complexity of costume described. Consider number of pieces in outfit, underwear, etc.
WORKMANSHIP (1-5 points) Success of the entry.
- quality of rendering.
- design of outfit: how well is it put together? Will it work as described?.
- pattern and construction details: accurate, clear, complete?
- embellishments and accessories: completely discussed and depicted?
- technical presentation: overall package neat, concise, well laid out?
CREATIVITY (1-6 points)
- 1: Piece isn't logical in context of period.
- 2: Piece is logical in context of period, but there is lack of understanding in the design.
- 3: Standard style, no real innovation.
- 4: Logical combination of elements of costume design.
- 5: #4 with some modifications.
- 6: #5 plus innovative use of embellishments, specified construction methods, fabrics, etc.; all logical to period context.
QUALITY (1-6 points) Evaluate the work as a whole.
NOTE: This category is subjective; however, the judge should take into account prior category scores, aesthetic appeal, presentation, intuitive response, and other such items not previously addressed.
CLOTHING DESIGN - INTERMEDIATE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)Must have at least 1 page, 2-3 pages preferable. More is acceptable. Give score based on the following:
- 0: No documentation.
- 1: Very inaccurate documentation
- 2: Minimum of time period, country of origin, pattern source (if any), style.
- 3: Minimum of above plus visual reference(s) to period examples, but little or no discussion of period practice; OR above plus discussion of period practice, but no visual reference(s).
- 4: #3 plus visual references and discussion of period practice, including specific period examples--primary sources if available--and rationale for choice of fabric(s), color(s) and design of major construction elements.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)

- 1: Minimum of time period, country of origin, pattern source (if any), style.
- 2: Minimum of above plus visual reference(s) to period examples, but little or no discussion of period practice; OR above plus discussion of period practice, but no visual reference(s).
- 3: #2 plus visual references and discussion of period practice, including specific period examples--primary sources if available--and rationale for choice of fabric(s), color(s) and design of major construction elements.
- 4: #3 plus rationale for all elements of clothing, including minor details; display of understanding of general style of the specified period; explanation for any deviations or variations from period norm.
