Includes period writing on a page or pages. Illumination (if any) will not be judged, but layout of any illumination in relation to the text will be judged. Subject matter should be period or logical to period style. (Ex. an original poem, a letter). For purposes of competition, SCA awards or official documents will be considered period texts.
Novice Intermediate Advanced
CALLIGRAPHY - NOVICE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points) Must have at least a 3X5 card. More is acceptable. Give one point for each of the following that is present:
- Identification/Description/Use of the entry.
- Approximate date and place/nationality in history that the entry is modeled upon.
- List style of the calligraphy.
- Cites at least one reference, either illustrative (pictures) or descriptive relating to either A) period use of such item OR B) period method of constructing such item OR C) both A & B.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)Give one point for each element as applicable:
- Use of period looking or actual period alphabet with style of capitals suited to style of minuscule (if applicable). Modern letters and variations for "j", "k", "w" are acceptable if in keeping with the period style
- Entry at period looking layout with arrangement of page suitable for stated style and alphabet. Drawn period capitals, such as Lombardic or Celtic, if included should not dominate the page.
- Use of calligraphy pen and period looking ink to calligraphy the letters on period looking paper or parchment paper. Steel nib pens or fountain pens are OK. (felt tip pens, day glow ink colors, and tablets with printed lines should be avoided.
- Text appropriate to period or current middle ages. Award scrolls and original verse or texts in period style in Modern English are considered period for SCA purposes
COMPLEXITY (1-5 points) Rank the ambition of the entry, not the workmanship, on a scale of 1 to 5 based on the following:
- Use of effective layout, margins and spacing and nibs for style of lettering and text content.
- Lines straight, letters well spaced, forms consistent
- Relative density of errors compared to whole; application of effective period correction methods; neatness of finished work
WORKMANSHIP (1-5 points)TRank the success of the entry on a scale 1-5 for each element based on the
- Use of effective layout, margins, spacing and nibs for style of lettering and text content.
- Lines straight, letters well spaced, forms consistent
- Relative density of errors compared to whole; application of effective period correction methods; neatness of finished work.
CREATIVITY (1-6 points)Bonus should be awarded for inspired material use and design, adaptation to suit wearer, and personality.
- 1: Exact copy of alphabet and layout from whatever source. Looks traced
- 2: Has used more than one source for letters and layouts, but combination has no innovation by the scribe.
- 3-4: Some entry at combining variant alphabets within a style, page variations accomplished by modified layouts, varied pen sizes, original forms.
- 5-6: Successful integration of elements from different sources, original letter forms, use of ligatures, flourishes, original layer, personalization.
QUALITY (1-6 points) Evaluate the work as a whole.
Evaluate the work as a whole. NOTE: This category is subjective; however, the judge should take into account prior category scores, aesthetic appeal, presentation, intuitive response, and other such items not previously addressed.
CALLIGRAPHY - INTERMEDIATE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)Must have at least 1 page, 2-3 pages preferable. More is acceptable. Give one point for each element present:
- Time period and place/country of origin and/or use in period.
- Description of style or school characteristics(i.e. Kells vs. Durrow) or discussion of logic applied to design of entry.
- List of tools and supplies used for entry (type of pens, inks, paper
- Reference citations: 2 or more references, at least one period source or photocopy or other illustration thereof.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)Give 1 point for each element as applicable:

- Difficulty of lettering styles, version of hand, and other color changes, use of pen flourishes and ligatures

- Use of effective layout, margins, spacing and nibs for style of lettering and text content
- Lines straight, letters well formed, forms consistent
- Relative density of errors compared to whole; application of effective period correction methods; neatness of finished work

DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)Must have at least 3 pages of discussion (NOT including visuals and bibliography). Give score based as follows:
- 0: No documentation or very inaccurate documentation.
- 1: Minimum information (time, place, style)
- 2:Same as # 1 with visual reference (Xeroxes, pictures, postcards, etc.) to period examples, but little or no discussion of period practice; or same as #1 plus discussion of period practice, but no visuals.
- 3: Same as #1 plus visual references and discussion of period practice, including at least specified period examples for alphabet and layer, and discussion of materials and techniques.
- 4: Same as #3 but greater detail including discussion of the entry's appropriateness to the subject matter, and rationale for the design of the page. Explains original research or experiment. Explains deviations/ variations from period norm.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)
- 0: Blatantly modern (Ex. in alphabet design or materials, such as lined paper)
- 1: Generally period, with some obviously modern elements (Ex. period alphabet done in callig-nib felt tip pen); or obvious mixture of elements for different cultures or periods (ex. Gothic capitals with a Celtic alphabet)
- 2: Alphabet, period; materials period or reasonable equivalents; overall period style and execution, with minor inconsistencies (ex. layout)
- 3: Same as #2, with no inconsistencies; layout, alphabet style and subject matter are appropriate to each other and to the period.
- 4: Special effort to achieve a completely period product by use of period design, materials, tools, techniques, etc.
COMPLEXITY (0-6 points) Rank the ambition of the entry, NOT the workmanship, on a scale of 0 to 6 based on the following:
- difficulty of materials used (ink, pens, paper, etc.)
- difficulty of alphabet
- difficulty of embellishment tried (rubrification, etc.)
- difficulty of composition tried (layout, proportion, balance, etc.)
- variety of alphabets, sizes, etc.
- scope of undertaking (size of work relative to amount of detail)
WORKMANSHIP (0-6 points)) Rank the success of the entry based on the following:
- execution of letterforms
- control of medium (neatness, ink density, etc.)
- letter and work spacing
- line spacing and evenness
- general proportioning(layout, proportion, balance, margins, etc.)
CREATIVITY (0-4 points)
- 0: Direct copy of an existing piece; OR work is illogical in context of period.
- 1: Logical combination of a few copied elements
- 2: Evidence of original work logical to period context (new letterforms, embellishment, etc.)
- 3: Creative interpolation in combination of elements, especially in layout.
- 4: Unusual combination of styles, elements, materials, etc., logical to a single period context; might have been done by a creative period scribe.
QUALITY (1-6 points)Evaluate the work as a whole. NOTE: This category is subjective; however, the judge should take into account prior category scores, aesthetic appeal, presentation, intuitive response, and other such items not previously addressed.
