An entry consists of a piece that is meant to accompany a costume that is not essential to the costume's existence; however, the addition of such adds a nice ambiance. Possible accessories include shoes, ruffs, cuffs, hats, headgear, gloves, bags, belts, scabbards, possibly underwear, made or constructed jewelry, etc. No weapons, no underwear in bad taste. A matched pair (Ex. shoes, gloves) counts as one item. Individual items may be entered in appropriate categories. (Metalwork, Embroidery, etc.) Emphasis is on appropriate period look. Entrant must specify source of any patterns, templates, etc. used
Novice Intermediate Advanced
CLOTHING ACCESSORIES - NOVICE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points) Must have at least a 3X5 card. More is acceptable. Give score based on the following:
- 0:No actual documentation
- 1:A minimum of a 3 x 5 card with any of the following: country of origin, period of origin, characteristics of style for that period, reference.
- 2:3 x 5 card with any of the two above
- 3:3 x 5 card with any of the three above
- 4:3 x 5 card with all four of the above
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)
- 0:Totally out of period (cavalry gauntlets, tennis shoes)
- 1:Out of period piece, but some knowledge of what would have been correct.
- 2:A piece that looks period, but has major flaws in cut and material, ( Ex. velvet on a Viking tunic, machine lace, plastic canvas, use of hot glue).
- 3:Minor flaws in cut and construction but knowledge of major flaws demonstrated and knowledge of corrections demonstrated. ( Iron-on interfacing)
- 4:Minor flaws in cut and construction but knowledge of construction demonstrated. Use and cut of faceted jewels before 1500, polyester fabrics, or machine embroidery.
COMPLEXITY (1-5 points) Rank the success of the entry, not the workmanship, on a scale of 1-5 based on the following:
- scope of endeavor ( # of pieces, size in relation to detail, etc.)
- variety of techniques attempted (i.e. gems, embroidery, lace and handwork)
- difficulty of techniques attempted
- difficulty and variety of materials used
- extent of original work (in patterns, etc.)
WORKMANSHIP (1-5 points) Rank the success of the entry on a scale of 1-5 based on the following:
- Straightness of seams, evenness of stitches
- Extras such as lining, hand-sewn trim
- Finished edges, partial lining, well cut and fits, hand work on decorations.
- Fully lined (if called for) special touches on augmentation and trim, handwork other than hems. Neat in appearance.
CREATIVITY (1-6 points)
- 1:Piece isn’t logical in context of period
- 2:Using a kit or pattern without alteration
- 3:Use of basic adjusted patterns to suit individual taste or style.
- 4:Modified both pattern and ornamentation
- 5:Elements of style for period researched and combined for a new piece. Must support with documentation OR an exact reproduction of a period piece.
- 6:Work is an original application of period or Known World designs and methods.
QUALITY (1-6 points) Evaluate the work as a whole.
NOTE: This category is subjective; however, the judge should take into account prior category scores, aesthetic appeal, presentation, intuitive response, and other such items not previously addressed.
CLOTHING ACCESSORIES - INTERMEDIATE
DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)Must have at least 1 page, 2-3 pages preferable. More is acceptable. Give score based on the following:
- 0:No actual documentation
- 1:Any one of the following: country of origin, characteristics of that period, reference
- 2:Any two of the above
- 3:All three of the above
- 4:All three of the above, plus picture of original, plus pattern used
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)
- 0:Totally out of period
- 1:Out of period piece, but demonstrates what would have been correct
- 2:A piece that looks period but has major flaws in cut in material (Ex. Velvet on a Viking tunic, machine lace, plastic canvas)
- 3:Minor flaws in cut and construction. Knowledge of major flaws demonstrated and explanation of what would have been correct given sumptuary laws. Looks theatrical.
- 4:Minor flaws in cut and construction but knowledge of corrections demonstrated. Cut and faceted jewels before 1500; machine embroidery.

DOCUMENTATION (0-4 points)
- 0:No Documentation
- 1:Minimum information (time place, style, pattern sources)
- 2:Same as #1 with visual reference (Xeroxes, pictures, postcards, etc.) to period examples, but little or no discussion of period practice; or same as 1 plus discussion of period practice but no visual reference.
- 3:Same as #1 plus visual references and discussion of period practice, including specified period style- primary sources if available - and rationale for materials used, color, design, construction, etc.
- 4:# 3 plus rationale for all details and for appropriateness of specified period style. Explains any original research or experiment. Explains any deviation or variation of period norms.
AUTHENTICITY (0-4 points)
- 0:Blatantly modern overall (use of plastic, fake leather without documentation)
- 1:Period elements combined in obviously inauthentic fashion within individual piece
or combined 2 time periods.
- 2:Set and piece look authentic, but include inauthentic elements in design, materials, colors, etc. (theater costume)
- 3:Authentic in look and feel; materials either period or exceptionally close, construction appropriate to period.
- 4:Above, plus special effort to achieve total period effect (Ex. all hand-done with period techniques); special effort to make entirely authentic and appropriate

CREATIVITY (0-4 points)
- 0:Piece is illogical in context of period.
- 1:Standard types and choice of item, no real innovation.
- 2:Logical choice and combination of items. Embellishments all logical to period context.
- 3:Above plus individual adaptation of period ideas.
- 4:Above, plus each element individual adaptation of period ideas in itself; elements work together in a cohesive fashion; set is designed around needs of a particular person or character wearing specific garb.(Ex. accessories for an embroideress might include a pouch, a needle case and an embroidered belt.)
QUALITY (1-6 points) Evaluate the work as a whole.
